One Small Dance of Many is a community art/movement project designed Kelly Hurlburt and Amery Kessler as part of the Urban Art Space artist residency. This summer and fall Central Ohio residents and visitors are invited to participate in One Small Dance of Many, a curiously subtle public art project with a great ambition, slowing down. The small dance is a nearly still movement exercise originally conceived of by the founder of Contact Improvisation, Steve Paxton. As a personal experience of noticing the subtle reflexes of the body, the small dance offers a shift in being aware of the connection between the mind and the body. It’s an act of noticing what may have been missed or taken for granted. Artists Kelly Hurlburt and Amery Kessler have a vision of many small dances, moments of near stillness, taking place in public by people throughout Central Ohio over the course of 6 months. They have teamed up with The Columbus Metropolitan Libraries and Columbus Recreation and Parks Department to offer the small dance as an experience available at 80 public locations throughout Franklin County, a big stage indeed. Visitors at libraries, community centers, and nature preserves will discover a small dance site, a designated space and a QR code to access one of several voices from the community guiding a rendition of the small dance.
